Lighting Ideas
In this section of our website we have included some lighting ideas that come from our installation team and many years of experience in lighting Light Fitting design and installation.
Lighting can be used in a functional way to make a room look larger or smaller. For example, if a room seems too narrow, then wash one wall with light to visually expand it. If a ceiling is high, but you want the room to have a more intimate and cozy feel, don't allow much light to escape beyond the height of the light/lamp shade.
If you want to make a small room look larger, try uplighting the ceiling. Don't be afraid to use multiple types of interior lighting in a room. In fact, this is a highly desirable way of creating dramatic effects.
Wall lights can be used to give a welcoming feel to any hallway. The use of uplighters on a wall generates a warm welcoming atmosphere.
Reading, watching TV, socialising and relaxing are all tasks which require different levels of light. Whatever the activity the room should be comfortable, and lighting should be flexible enough to provide for the range of tasks, situations, and desired harmonious effects. In our shop we have a wide range of lights to suit every need.
The point of converge in most homes is the Living room. It requires flexible lighting to accommodate all members of the family and uses. The Living room is not as laborious as the bathroom or the kitchen, so decorative and incandescent light can be used through a central fixture. A chandelier or a glass uplighter will provide this. This fixture should be energy efficient as it is usually left on for long periods of time. By creating lighting layers in this room it will enable you to provide for most activities whilst having flexibility. To create your lighting layers you would need to use general, accent and task lighting. An example of this could be your room is lit up with the main chandelier, the walls have wall lamps lighting up a particular area, and you have a standing lamp in a quiet corner where you can sit and read.
The bedroom, apart from sleeping, can be used as somewhere to escape to and relax.
Bedrooms are very different to other rooms in your home. The use of a central ceiling light on a dimmer switch will provide functional lighting which can be controlled to create a more relaxed atmosphere. Individually controlled bedside lamps can be used for reading.
It is possible to have bedside lighting controlled from the local lighting circuit using a 5 Amp plug & socket system. This means that they can be switched on when entering the room and switched off from beside the bed, by using a two-way switching system.
Obviously, any alteration to the local lighting circuit wiring must be done properly. Ask a qualified electrician for advice on the various possibilities.
