There is a wide variety of ceiling lights designed for outside use. Most with high IP ratings which tells you that the outside ceiling light that you have chosen is designed to withstand the elements for many years to come.

Styles of outdoor ceiling lights range from flush fitting traditional porch lights, traditional hanging porch lights that have a chain suspension to modern halogen flush outdoor ceiling lights, round or square to suit your particular home design.

Energy saving outside ceiling lights are also available. Although virtually all outdoor lighting these days will accept a low energy light bulb.

Traditionally we would say that most hanging porch lights tend to be more suited to older style properties and cottages. Black hanging porch lanterns are still the most popular ceiling light designed for use outside of the home. However, hanging outside lanterns are also available in Galvanised and Copper finishes to suit contemporary dwelling.

When choosing lighting for outside your home whether it may be garden lighting or any lighting which would be exposed to the elements it is worth considering the IP rating of the outdoor light fitting that you are buying. IP44 is generally enough protection from the ingress of moisture and dust. A higher rating will always afford more protection from wind and rain allowing moisture into the light fitting.

It is always a good idea to consult your Electrician when considering the best level of IP protection required for your particular lighting scheme.
