Most spotlight lights which are designed for use in a kitchen, use mains voltage GU10 halogen lamps. There are now an increasing number of low energy spotlights which will accept only low energy light bulbs.

For the kitchen, depending on its size, a bar or track spotlight will give the greatest lighting flexibility as you will be able to direct each individual spot light to whichever point in the room the light is most required. For example, a 4 light bar spotlight could be positioned in the middle of your kitchen ceiling and then direct one spotlight towards your kitchen sink, one towards your cooker and perhaps point the other two at your work surfaces.

Many of the halogen kitchen spotlight units come supplied with 50W GU10 halogen lamps. It is always possible to use a lower wattage light bulb if required. The GU10 halogen lamps are dimmable with a standard dimmer switch. Although please remember that if you were to use low energy GU10 light bulbs, these are not generally suitable for dimming.

Spotlights are highly versatile. Many can be mounted on the wall or ceiling. Many of the single spotlights come with their own integral switches which is an added feature of spotlights designed for use in a kitchen.

Of course spotlights can be used in any room in the house, even the bathroom. Bathroom spotlights should be IP44 rated and be marked that they are suitable for use in a bathroom. Perhaps you are looking to make a feature of your stairwell by hanging a large ceiling chandelier or a long drop pendant ceiling light from the ceiling of your landing so that it drops down by the side of your staircase. This can be an attractive ornamental feature that your visitors can admire as they ascend your staircase.

A landing with a gallery gives an even greater choice, wall lights on the landing which match a central hanging ceiling light. Wall uplighters on the stairs walls to light the way downstairs or upstairs.

For safety reasons, the positioning of any lighting in area of a stairwell should be considered carefully. Apart from ease of lamp changing thought must be given to adequate lighting levels on and near the stairs even if your staircase only has a few steps.

It is normal in any house to have two-way switching so that you can switch on at least one landing light before mounting the stairs. Consider using more than one switch for controlling the wall and ceiling lights on your stairwell and landing. Accent lighting could be used, perhaps by the use of picture lights, recessed lights or spotlights to light the corners.

Dimmable Ceiling and Wall Lights

Which of your ceiling lights or wall lights are suitable for dimming? The answer depends on the type of light bulb that the light fitting takes.

Standard incandescent light bulbs are most always suitable for dimming. Other types of light bulbs that can be dimmed are Halogen GU10 lamps. These types of lamp are commonly found in kitchen spotlight bars and single spotlights.

It must be stressed that it is important always to consult an Electrician if you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a light fitting concerning the use of a dimmer switch. Too many lights on one dimmer switch could cause a problem.

If you would wish to be able to dim the lighting in your bathroom, consult your Electrician as he would be able to offer you the best advice.

Using a dimmer switch or dimmer switches in a room can completely alter the ambience of the room. For example, recessed lighting in a kitchen can benefit from the installation of a dimmer switch. During food preparation times it is generally helpful to have as much illumination in a room. However and certainly if you kitchen serves as a reception room or dining room, the ability to dim the lights at certain times is certainly very useful.

Many contemporary light fittings now use mains voltage halogen G9 capsule bulbs; this type of light bulb is also suitable for dimming. It is important though not to confuse these with the smaller G4 low voltage light bulbs which are generally not suitable for dimming as there is a transformer involved. We would say generally, because some of these light fittings come either with touch dimmable control within the fitting or and again, consult your Electrician about this, can be dimmed with a specialist dimmer switch.

Dimmer switches can enhance the lighting scheme in your home. Whether used for your ceiling or wall lights, a well thought through lighting layout incorporating dimming technology will allow you to increase the flexibility of your lighting scheme.

Depending on your desired lighting effect, recessed downlighters could be installed in straight lines or placed in your ceiling in a random pattern. Contemporary design suggests straight lines are preferred.

Fireproof recessed down lights do not require additional smoke hoods to be installed as with conventional recessed down-lights.

Mains voltage wall mounted halogen spotlights or halogen spot lights fixed to the ceiling can be dimmed using a standard dimmer switch. Possibly take advice from your Electrician as to how many spotlights can be switched by one dimmer switch.

If you have a kitchen diner, the spotlights can be switched to a lower setting when the spotlights on your ceiling are not needed as task lighting.

Spotlights on a ceiling track or a bar can usually be mounted on a wall if required. Ip44 rated spotlights can in theory be positioned inside zone 1 of a bathroom, however it is better to install any bathroom light fitting away from the bath or shower. If you have a small bathroom, installing ceiling spotlights in the bathroom should ensure a good lighting level throughout the bathroom.

Wall mounted bathroom spotlights can be aimed at the bathroom basin and are ideal as task lighting. Usually finished in Chrome these spotlights normally have a pull switch incorporated within them so that can be separately switched from the bathroom ceiling light.

Mains voltage GU10 halogen spotlights and low voltage bathroom spotlights with integral transformers are available some with mirror back plates which allows reflection of the light.

Single or multiple spotlights. GU10 halogen spotlights are probably the most common type of spotlight. Either as single units or part of a track or multi-spotlight fitting. Great for kitchens although be aware that GU10 halogen lamps will not have as high a light output as G9 lamps. This is because the GU10 lamps use more of their energy in heat.

Single spotlights are popular in barn conversions as they can be mounted so that the light points towards the ceiling. This shows off any ceiling beams and also lights the room. Switched single spotlights are available either with switches on the base or with pull cord switches.
