Recessed brick lights are an ideal form of low cost low level outdoor wall lighting. These brick lights can be recessed into your outside walls to light the way to the door of your house or can be used to light up a garden wall or your drive way. There is a wide variety of ceiling lights designed for outside use. Most with high IP ratings which tells you that the outside ceiling light that you have chosen is designed to withstand the elements for many years to come.

Styles of outdoor ceiling lights range from flush fitting traditional porch lights, traditional hanging porch lights that have a chain suspension to modern halogen flush outdoor ceiling lights, round or square to suit your particular home design.

If the chain on your desired lantern is too long, simply shorten it to achieve the optimum height to illuminate the front of the house. A hanging chain porch lantern will help you find your keys on a dark night. You could have the lantern switched by a passive infra-red detector so that the light comes on when you approach your doorway.

Recessed outside lights could be switched using a timer or switched directly from your garage or house or perhaps by using a passive infra-red detector, positioned so that the recessed lights switch on automatically when you drive towards your house or garage.

Recessed outside lights generally come in Stainless steel or a Grey finish. Many will take energy saving lamps. Using low energy lamps if possible is a good idea as lamp replacement is cut down to a minimum. Most low energy lamps will last at least 8000 hours and as your driveway lights are not lit up most of the day, they should last a considerable length of time without re-lamping.

Post lights could be half hidden amongst the shrubbery and flower beds along your driveway. This would illuminate your garden and driveway in a subtle and stylish way, lighting the way up to the house but not in an overpowering way.

Energy saving or LED post lights are available, the lamps for low energy lighting posts would last considerably longer than standard light bulbs. It is possible to connect several outside lights together so that they all switch on at the same time. They could be connected to separate PIR units which would not necessarily be part of the security light fitting. This could be a useful idea if you have a large house and a surrounding garden. Flood lights mounted high up on a wall, pointing downwards would floodlight a garden area if someone approached the house. An override switch could be installed to switch the security lights on and off at other times.
