Kitchen Spotlights

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Our range of spotlights for the kitchen is extensive. If you are looking to buy spotlights online today, we have a massive selection of single spotlights or bar spotlights, track spotlights, spotlights on a square or round plate and spiral spotlights. We can deliver your spotlights to you wherever you live in the U.K.

Chrome, brushed chrome, black, black chrome or brass spotlights. Satin silver, polished chrome or even nickel spotlights are all available to suit your budget, however larger or small. Traditional or modern designs are available. There will be a design or colour of spotlight that will match in with your decor whether your home is a traditional cottage or a more contemporary design of home.

Most spotlight lights which are designed for use in a kitchen, use mains voltage GU10 halogen lamps. There are now an increasing number of low energy spotlights which will accept only low energy light bulbs.

For the kitchen, depending on its size, a bar or track spotlight will give the greatest lighting flexibility as you will be able to direct each individual spot light to whichever point in the room the light is most required. For example, a 4 light bar spotlight could be positioned in the middle of your kitchen ceiling and then direct one spotlight towards your kitchen sink, one towards your cooker and perhaps point the other two at your work surfaces.

For the larger kitchen, additional spotlights may be required. Consider using single spotlights and supplementary lighting or perhaps to illuminate a certain area in the kitchen or possibly to light up the cooker to make cooking easier.

Many of the halogen kitchen spotlight units come supplied with 50W GU10 halogen lamps. It is always possible to use a lower wattage light bulb if required. The GU10 halogen lamps are dimmable with a standard dimmer switch. Although please remember that if you were to use low energy GU10 light bulbs, these are not generally suitable for dimming.

Spotlights are highly versatile. Many can be mounted on the wall or ceiling. Many of the single spotlights come with their own integral switches which is an added feature of spotlights designed for use in a kitchen.

Of course spotlights can be used in any room in the house, even the bathroom. Bathroom spotlights should be IP44 rated and be marked that they are suitable for use in a bathroom. Spotlight can be used for bedroom lighting also. Mounted perhaps on a beam in a bedroom, spotlights can be used to create some stunning lighting effects. This is true for any room in your home. The huge range of spotlights available makes them ideal as a form of lighting for use in all rooms in the home or office and not just for kitchens.

Some bathroom wall lights come with G9 halogen lamps, these are normally suitable to be used with a dimmer switch which would usually need to be positioned outside of the bathroom. Dimmable Ceiling and Wall Lights

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Which of your ceiling lights or wall lights are suitable for dimming? The answer depends on the type of light bulb that the light fitting takes.

Standard incandescent light bulbs are most always suitable for dimming. Other types of light bulbs that can be dimmed are Halogen GU10 lamps. These types of lamp are commonly found in kitchen spotlight bars and single spotlights.

It must be stressed that it is important always to consult an Electrician if you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a light fitting concerning the use of a dimmer switch. Too many lights on one dimmer switch could cause a problem.

If you would wish to be able to dim the lighting in your bathroom, consult your Electrician as he would be able to offer you the best advice.

Using a dimmer switch or dimmer switches in a room can completely alter the ambience of the room. For example, recessed lighting in a kitchen can benefit from the installation of a dimmer switch. During food preparation times it is generally helpful to have as much illumination in a room. However and certainly if you kitchen serves as a reception room or dining room, the ability to dim the lights at certain times is certainly very useful.

Many contemporary light fittings now use mains voltage halogen G9 capsule bulbs; this type of light bulb is also suitable for dimming. It is important though not to confuse these with the smaller G4 low voltage light bulbs which are generally not suitable for dimming as there is a transformer involved. We would say generally, because some of these light fittings come either with touch dimmable control within the fitting or and again, consult your Electrician about this, can be dimmed with a specialist dimmer switch.

Dimmer switches can enhance the lighting scheme in your home. Whether used for your ceiling or wall lights, a well thought through lighting layout incorporating dimming technology will allow you to increase the flexibility of your lighting scheme.

Downlights and Recessed Ceiling Lights

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Consider using recessed lighting in your kitchen or the living areas of your home. Halogen recessed lights, either mains voltage or low voltage are an ideal lighting solution for a kitchen as an even spread of light throughout the kitchen can be achieved. Directional recessed downlights give added flexibility. Bathrooms, shower rooms and dressing rooms can be effectively lit by using recessed ceiling lights.

Depending on your desired lighting effect, recessed downlighters could be installed in straight lines or placed in your ceiling in a random pattern. Contemporary design suggests straight lines are preferred.

Fireproof recessed down lights do not require additional smoke hoods to be installed as with conventional recessed down-lights.

As there may be installation options to be decided upon when considering recessed lighting, such as positioning of recessed lights between joists in a ceiling, whether to use mains voltage or low voltage recessed lights, the floor or ceiling space requirements, it is generally a good idea to speak to your Electrician who would help you decide the best lighting design and which type of recessed lights are best suited to your particular lighting project.

Traditionally White has been and probably still is the most popular finish of recessed downlight. This is probably because the White finish blends in nicely with a White ceiling, show casing the light from the downlighter and not the down-lighter itself.

If you wish your recessed light fittings to be a feature of your lighting scheme, other finishes such as Chrome, Brass, Nickel or Aluminium are available. Crystal glass downlights are also becoming a popular option. Chrome recessed ceiling lights would look stunning in a bathroom or en-suite bathroom.

In the modern kitchen or any room in the home, display and task lighting can be achieved using recessed lighting. Wall washer downlights may be used to light a picture on a wall or ornaments on a dresser or table.

A wide range of possibilities and high flexibility makes recessed ceiling lighting an option to consider while choosing the lighting for your home or office.

Illuminated Mirrors for your Bathroom

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

An illuminated bathroom mirror would be an ideal form of task lighting in your bathroom. Whether for applying make-up or shaving, an illuminated bathroom mirror will light up the area of your bathroom where a good level of light is generally required.

For smaller bathrooms where you may require a higher level of light and space is at a premium, an illuminated mirror can help as the lights are incorporated in the mirror, doing away with need for an extra light over a mirror or wall lights in the bathroom.

If your illuminated bathroom mirror is to be installed close to the bath(within 600mm) it is then essential to look for one with an IP44 rating as these illuminated bathroom mirrors can be installed in zone 2 of the bathroom, see our bathroom lighting information page for further details regarding bathroom lighting zones. An illuminated bathroom mirror with a lower IP rating is OK to use outside of bathroom zones. We would always advise the use of IP44 rated light fittings in a small bathroom.

Some bathroom illuminated mirrors come with integral pull cord switches. If the illuminated bathroom mirror that you wish to purchase does not come with an integral switch you could consider whether you need the mirror switched separately or with the main bathroom ceiling light. Your Electrician could advise you as to other switching options if you don’t want the illuminated bathroom mirror to be switched on with the bathroom central ceiling light.
